October 25, 2018 - Legal Update Opportunity for Community Schools!

LEGAL UPDATE SEMINAR FOR
COMMUNITY SCHOOLS!

A Vibrant New Partnership

Maria Limbert Markakis and Albin Bauer II, have been advocating for community schools since the beginning of Ohio's charter school program.

On August 1, 2018, Maria and Albin (formerly with the law firm of Day Ketterer), joined forces with established education lawyers to become Peters, Kalail & Markakis Co., L.P.A.

Aligning resources, leveraging experience, and adding depth places PKM at the forefront of the Ohio Community School movement.

Well-versed in start-ups, board policies, personnel matters, regulatory compliance, sponsor evaluations, sponsorship transfers, financial audits, FTE reviews, and management agreement negotiations, Maria and Albin have protected dozens of community school agreements against attacks by anti-charter groups and have successfully defended against efforts to regulate community schools under Ohio's charitable trust laws.

Increased oversight and scrutiny, growth in the number of sponsors and management companies, and diminished financial support all contribute to the daily challenges faced by community schools.

Maria and Albin and their vibrant team of school attorneys at PKM strive to keep community school stakeholders informed of recent legislative, policy and legal developments.
Please join Maria Markakis, Albin Bauer, and Sherrie Massey for a complimentary community school law update:

October 16, 2018 -ESSA Institutes New EL Requirements – LAS Links Can Help

LAS Links Banner Graphic

Does your English learner program have what it needs to support the new requirements?

LAS Links can help you meet them.

LAS Links® English and Spanish can be used along with your state’s English Language Proficiency (ELP) assessment to monitor the progress of your English learners and/or dual language students. LAS Links monitors student progress in acquiring English language skills throughout the school year. This powerful research-based assessment allows teachers to target areas of student language deficiencies and build upon areas of strength. The platform enables educators to understand the progress of students as they move through the stages of language acquisition, from grades preK–12.

With LAS Links you can:
·     Access instructional data throughout the year to make gains towards your Every Student Success Act (ESSA) performance goals.
·     Support the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS), WIDA, ELPA 21 and TESOL, ACTFL standards by bridging the gap between language proficiency and academic success.
·     Monitor progress in language proficiency throughout the school year to measure language acquisition (pre/post testing opportunities) and prior to administering your state’s ELP assessment.
·     Allow for local online scoring and immediate reporting to share student results with stakeholders and provide meaningful instruction.
·     Provide traditional language proficiency reports as well as composite scores and academic context strands (Math, Science, Technical Subjects, Social Studies, History, and Language Arts), including longitudinal reporting between grades and year-over-year.

Alternate assessment public comments: 1 percent waiver extension request for reading, mathematics and science

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires states to ensure the total number of students assessed in each subject using the Alternate Assessment for Students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities (AASCD) does not exceed 1 percent of the total number of all students in the state who took Ohio’s State Tests. States that anticipate they will exceed 1 percent in alternate assessment participation must submit a waiver request to the U.S. Department of Education. Ohio’s alternate assessment participation rate is approximately 1.9 percent. Ohio will request an extension to the 2017-2018 waiver. Public comments on the extension request will be collected via surveythrough Oct. 31, 2018.
